Enemy placement is a big issue too, like the game is trying its hardest to cheap-shot you to death. Special shoutout to the banshees, one of the most annoying enemy types I think I've ever seen. As a result, platforming feels risky and dying never feels like it's your fault.Įnemy design seems built to annoy the player as much as possible, with enemies that fly around and push you off the level, fire powerful ranged attacks so quickly you can't reasonably dodge or counter, or even just hit you so many times in rapid succession that you'll lose your whole life bar to a single small enemy. Often it feels like actions simply don't work, like the ledge grab, which seems to have an agenda on which ledges you can or can't grab, but never bothers to clue you in on this. Scrolling between weapons takes a long time too, but this is probably only an issue with the console versions. Weapons are slow to use, so often you'll line up an attack only for the enemy to move away, so you'll miss the attack and waste your mana. Attacks have a significant delay (but enemies don't), it's hard to hit anything because of wonky hit detection, and platforming is dreadful because of the jumping, which is both floaty AND unresponsive. I played on PS3, so perhaps the PC version is better in some ways (it almost certainly runs better) but many of my issues with this game are design choices that seem to resent the player.Ĭontrol is either floaty or unresponsive there isn't a single action that feels good to perform in this game.

This, however, was one case in which I wish I had skipped ahead instead of suffering through what can only be described as a miserable experience. I usually like to get some context for later games in series, so I go through earlier entries no matter how dated they are. In preparation for playing Madness Returns I decided to go through the original game.
